Cheap-as Crayon Candles

I’m not the only one to have this idea, but having a little bit of time on my hands before work I thought I’d give it a go and document the process. It’s a cheap way of getting a softly coloured candle from a plain white tea light, without the scent if you want to avoid scented candles. Grab your cheap tea lights and a box of crayons - these crayons pictured cost me £1. Only a small amount of crayon wax need be shaved or cut off; I used little spoons to approximate how much wax was used, and to keep it neat.

Find a safe way to melt your tealights without lighting them - I used my increasingly super-witchy leccy fire and an old butter dish. Once completely melted, remove the wick and tab and try not to put them down anywhere they will adhere to till judgement day. Then, add the shaved wax. (I used all the blue wa pictured in the spoon for this candle.)

Stir the melted wax till the colour is even, then replace the wick and tab. Place it somewhere cool to solidify again. To this green candle, I added fine gold glitter and let it cool on the deactivated fire and tray - the effect of convection currents is very very pretty, and it encourages the glitter not to immediately settle on the base of the tealight.

The first three attempts - half of the purple wax to make the lavender candle and all of the black wax to make the grey. Very subtle and soft colours, that have resolidified with a waxy sheen. These are quick and cheap, not luxury. The fine glitter in the green candle is barely visible but does lend an iridescence to the unlit candle. Lighting it will let the glitter shine again.

Cheap as chips way to whip up a custom coloured candle for magic or ritual - powdered herbs or scented oils are optional.

5 Herbs that Calm Anxiety WIthout Making you Sleepy

1. Passionflower

The University of Maryland Medical Center states that passionflower has shown in a few studies to work as well as some of the benzodiazepine medications that are usually prescribed for treating anxiety.

A four-week double-blind study, for example, compared passionflower with oxazepam. Results showed oxazepam worked more quickly, but by the end of the study period, both treatments were shown to be equally effective. Bonus—side effects like daytime drowsiness were fewer with passionflower.

A second study also showed that passionflower helped ease symptoms like anxiety, irritability, agitation, and depression in participants going through withdrawal from an opiate drug addiction.

Dosage: Try one cup of passionflower tea three times daily, 45 drops of liquid extract daily, or about 90 mg/day.

2. Lavender

A 2010 multi-center, double blind randomized study of lavender oil compared to anti-anxiety medication lorazepam found that both were effective against generalized and persistent anxiety. Bonus — lavender had no sedative side effects.

“Since lavender oil showed no sedative effects,” researchers stated, it could be an effective and “well-tolerated alternative to benzodiazepines” to treat generalized anxiety. An earlier 2000 study found similar results.

Dosage: Try about 80 mg/day of the supplement, or use the oil as an aromatherapy solution.

3. Lemon balm

Though usually found in combination with other herbs, lemon balm also has anti-anxiety powers on its own.

Research published in 2004, for instance, gave participants a single dose of lemon balm extract (300 mg or 600 mg) or a placebo, then measured their mood after one hour. The higher dose resulted in reduced stress and improved calmness and alertness. Even the lower dose helped participants do math problems more quickly.

Dosage: Use in aromatherapy, try 300-500 mg of dried lemon balm three times daily, 60 drops daily, or 1/4 to 1 teaspoon of dried lemon balm herb in hot water for a tea four times daily.

4. Ashwagandha

A 2012 double blind, placebo-controlled study gave participants either placebo or a capsule containing 300 mg of high-concentration full-spectrum ashwagandha extract, twice a day. The study lasted for 60 days. Those taking the ashwagandha showed significant improvements. Even the levels of the stress hormone cortisol were substantially reduced in those taking the extract. And there were no serious side effects.

In an earlier 2000 study, ashwagandha had anxiety-relieving effects similar to those of lorazepam.

Dosage: Typical dosage is 300 mg standardized to at least one to five percent withanolides, once or twice a day.

5. L-theanine

This one isn’t really a herb — it’s a water-soluble amino acid,  but it’s gotten such good research behind it we had to include it here. It’s found mainly in green tea and black tea and is also available as a supplement.

Studies have found that it acts directly on the brain, helping to reduce stress and anxiety—without causing drowsiness.

Research from 2008, for example, found that those participants taking 50 mg of L-theanine a day had a greater increase in alpha (relaxed brain waves) activity than those who took a placebo.

An earlier 1998 study found that 200 mg a day lead to increased alpha-brain waves and a relaxed, yet alert, state of mind.

A later 2011 study found that it was also associated with reduced anxiety, and was well tolerated and safe for participants.

Dosage: A typical cup of black tea contains only about 25 mg of l-theanine and green tea only about 8 mg. While a cup of tea may be calming, if you want more potent effects, try a supplement, about 200 mg a day.

Natural Exfoliants!

Why should you exfoliate?

Exfoliating is an important part in caring for your skin. Our bodies create new cells on the skin’s inner layer called the dermis, and as they form, we naturally shed the old, dead cells that are pushed to the outer layer called the epidermis. But sometimes they can remain for too long, making your skin look dull and causing impurities. Exfoliating once or twice a week (I like to in the shower because it’s quick and convenient) can assist the natural shedding process in removing dead cells, rejuvenating, smoothing softening and toning your skin. It helps removes debris and dirt that can clog your pores and cause acne, blemishes or even ingrown hairs. Any and all skin types can exfoliate with the right (natural) ingredients! Sensitive, oily or dry!

Why natural ingredients?

Simple! Using natural ingredients on your skin is a much better alternative to using products that contain harsh and harmful chemicals that can irritate and even worsen your skin. Bonus points when the ingredients are organic and/or vegan (thus being cruelty free as well!) This way, it’s better for you, your skin, your body, the environment…and your wallet, since you probably have a lot of this stuff in your house already!

Here are some good, natural ingredients for your skin!

Good things for your skin!

Honey -

  • Antiseptic: Anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal.
  • Helps reduce skin infections and fight acne.
  • Full of antioxidants.
  • Helps you skin protect and repair iteself.
  • Reduces inflammation.
  • Speeds up natural exfoliantion process.
  • Humectant properties so it attracts moisture to your skin and helps hydrate it.

Yogurt -

  • Contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, but is mild enough to use on any skin type.
  • The acid can help even out skin tone.
  • Hydrates and exfoliates.
  • Skin smoothing and soothing properties.

Apply to skin, let sit for 20 minutes, rinse.

Sugar -

  • Good for all skin types.
  • Natural source of glycolic acid, another alpha hydroxy acid, that is good at breaking down the protein holding dead skin cells to the epidermis.
  • Boosts new skin cell production.
  • Smooths and softens skin.

Mix 1 teaspoon of sugar with ½ teaspoon honey. In circular motions, gently massage into your skin and then rinse well.

Mix about one half cup of sugar, white or brown, with enough oil (olive, grapeseed, sunflower, coconut, jojoba – whatever you prefer or have on hand!). Again, in circular motions, rub onto skin and rinse. Works for your body as well :)

Oatmeal -

  • Gentle exfoliant (perfect for sensitive skin when ground up! but can also be used whole)
  • Anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Natural moisturizer, hydrates skin.
  • Absorbs and removes surface dirt and impurities.
  • Soothes and heals acne, sunburns, dry skins and more.

Grind one cup of oatmeal in a blender, food processor or by hand with a mortar and pestle (or some other way, just grind it up somehow) and mix together with one cup of plain yogurt and two tablespoons of honey. Stir until it becomes a smooth paste and apply to face. Leave it for 15 minutes and then rinse with warm water.

Mix 1 tablespoon of ground oatmeal with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of oil. Rub onto face and then rinse.

Papaya-

  • Contains the enzyme ‘papain’ that dissolves old dead cells, but doesn’t harm younger, new ones.
  • It’s believed that this enzyme can heal heal the skin, causing lines and age spots to vanish.
  • It’s most potent in young, green fruit.
  • Keeps your skin hydrated.

Mash one and use it as a facial mask!

Ground Coffee -

  • Just as it perks you up, it serves as a skin stimulant.
  • Potent exfoliant.
  • Helps tone the skin.
  • Contains caffeic acid which has anti-inflammatory properties and can boost collagen production.
  • Good fresh or used!

Stir together two cups ground coffee with one cup sea salt and two to three tables spoons of oil. Wet your face with warm water (not hot!) to open your pores and then, in circular motions, rub onto skin and then rinse!

Sea Salt -

  • One of the best and most powerful exfoliants, especially for dry skin.
  • Full of trace minerals that rejuvenate your skin, stimulate cell growth and help moisturize.
  • Natural detoxifies your skin

Mix with oil, rub onto wet skin in circular motions and rinse. This works well all over your body!

If you don’t have oil, you can just use water. Oil just doubles as a moisturizer (and each oil has it’s own beneficial properties). If you make a big enough batch of a scrub, you may want to store it in a glass container in the fridge! Of course these can be doubled or made smaller, just keep the proportions relatively the same :)

I am no expert, this is just information I have gathered over time of learning about natural alternatives. If you have a serious skin issue, seek medical attention please.

A masterpost of money spells from the Encyclopaedia of 5000, as requested by a kindly anon. For the curious, here are some general bits and pieces about making/casting money spells.

  • PRIMARY COLOURS: green and gold;
  • PRIMARY NUMBERS: 2, because it encapsulates the concept of doubling;
  • PLANETS: Jupiter, because it’s the planet of good fortune; the moon, because it’s the planet of magic and fulfilled wishes; and Mercury, because the Roman god whose name it bears is involved with prosperity and finance;
  • Spells for financial growth, to increase money or business, should coincide with the waxing moon.

Bathbomb Tutorial!

Being of irrelevant status in most of what’s “cool,” I had no idea what the hell bathbombs where until just recently, and I was pretty unimpressed with the prices at places like Lush. I looked up a recipe and ordered the ingredients online and have messed with it in the few batches I’ve tried so far. Starting with a pound of each dry ingredient, I can make about four batches of six or seven bathbombs, depending on how consistent I am with my sizes, which isn’t often. Anyway, here’s how to make your own!

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 1/3 cup epsom salts

Wet Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 tbsp olive or any other light oil
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp fragrance oil
  • 10 to 12 drops of food coloring

Mix your dry ingredients together, and set aside. Pour the wet ingredients into a small cup and pour it together into the dry.

Enjoy that fizz for a sec, and the color, ooooooh. Anyway, mix together throughly and then pack into small balls or place into molds (let set for a couple of hours, then it can air dry).

These will take anywhere from a day to two to dry out fully, so if you’re like me and are impatient to test, yes, you can still dry one out. It just probably won’t float, if you want that.

Speaking of which, if you get extra oil into the mix, it will take longer to dry, and will probably be heavier, so mix in extra epson salts. Extra epson salts alone make for a speeder drying time and a little extra shine.

Make sure to get body safe oils and colors, not candle stuff, go for soap making materials. Mixing colors leads to interesting results, I tried to make purple, and my bathbombs dried to a cakepop like looking ball, but in the water it’s a most fabulous pink. Try mixes of scents (but don’t overdo it, tried something that now smells like playdoh in another batch) and see what combos you can come up with!

I’d love to see what everyone creates, send me photos or reblog with your own! Happy crafting!

This is definitely something I’ll have to try! I love taking baths and don’t often get to spoil myself at Lush, so this would be cool.

Oooh, these look cool! I’m def gonna do some research on what fun stuff I can put in these that’s body safe (and safe for my vag chemistry too)
